How to buy honey bees?

Honey bees can be purchased in the form of packages, nucleus colonies (nucs), or obtained in the form of a divide from an existing colony. Honey bee packages and nucleus colonies can be obtained from most local sources for beekeeping supplies (those listed above).

Honey bees are usually picked up and installed by the beekeeper between April and early June. It is wise to order honey bees well ahead of time (e.g. during the winter) as supplies may become restricted. Installing honey bees early in the year gives the colony enough time to grow before winter arrives.
